Beach Community Redevelopment Forum – March 14

Residents with questions about future plans for Hollywood Beach can get the answers Wed., March 14 at the CRA Beach District 1 Community Redevelopment Forum.

City Commissioner Cathy Anderson, who represents the Beach District, will host the forum, along with the Beach District of the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), at 6 p.m. at the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center, 1301 S. Ocean Drive.

Residents will be updated on the ongoing beach redevelopment effort and hear a presentation by urban planner Bernard Zyscovich, who presented the results of his comprehensive beach planning and zoning study last November. The study, designed to foster a “village atmosphere,” addresses City codes, regulations and objectives for future public and private development, as well as new marketing and tourism initiatives for the beach, the economic engine for the entire City.

Recommendations include branding Hollywood Beach as a “green destination,” or nature-based resort area with enhanced landscaping features; utilizing both sides of State Road A1A, creating a boardwalk along the Intracoastal Waterway and providing water access via boat rentals; making A1A more pedestrian-friendly by promoting alternative forms of mobility; and reducing the parking requirements for commercial and hotel properties, with a shared parking strategy through new “capture garages” along the beach.

In addition, Zyscovich proposes new setback requirements on A1A and Surf Road and a variation in building height, and recommends height and shade limitations for new construction to preserve the resort character of the beach.

The March 14 forum will address “any issue that anybody has” regarding Hollywood Beach, said Anderson. “I wanted the forum because so many beach residents have called me. We want them to have a comfort level.”

Beach District CRA Executive Director Gil Martinez said community input is a crucial component of the overall beach redevelopment effort.

“We always seek and appreciate the comments and suggestions of our beach residents and business owners, because they’re the ones who have a real vested interest in the future of Hollywood Beach,” Martinez said.
